What’s Up With this Swine Flu—Oops, I Mean the H1N1 Virus

What do you make of all this business of the swine flu? I watch these news stories with all these people walking around wearing masks and wonder what to make of the whole thing. I guess because my whole life I have been around people that have gotten and recovered from the flu, I find it hard to comprehend something that normally comes and goes as being as deadly as they are making this flu strain out to be.
It is difficult for me to be as scared as many people are being, but it can happen that millions of people could die from a resistant flu strain. When I was in college a wrote a paper about the flu pandemic that occurred in the early 1900’s and if you read what I read when I was researching this paper, you would be taking every possible precaution to guard against coming in contact with anyone.
The bad thing about these flu strains is a person is contagious before they have symptoms. So, you could be in contact today with someone that is fine and tomorrow they could have symptoms and you would have already been exposed. In the pandemic of the 1900s a person could have no symptoms and be dead in less than 48 hours.
Millions of people died back in the 1900’s and I believe if we were exposed to a strain that deadly today we would be in a lot of trouble. With international travel being what it is, this virus could literally become global with a matter of a few days.
I live within a few miles of a business that markets medical masks and surgical gloves and at the current time they are not being affected by the economy in the least. There sales have increased ten fold and they are working overtime to get their shipments out for delivery.
I think the current outbreak may be on its way out, but there is still a lot to be said for hand washing.

There are a couple of cases here in Germany, but people are not concerned at all. For example I got a guy here who is leaving for Mexico with his family in a week.
It’s the flu, it’s resistant, it’s still the flu. You got the flu you ask your family doc for something, in this case you may fear it’s H1N1 and call him/her faster.

Ex. some one has h1n1 and doesn’t take enough antibiotics therefore not killing the entire virus making it adapt to the antibiotic if you will.

I didn’t know what to think of it either.. but now it scares me. I haven’t heard too much about it in the news this week, but I presume the problem is still there. I know that scientists are trying to create a vaccine.. but it won’t be ready for a while yet. I think we all have to just be hygenic and try not to worry or panic

Well I have been following the outbreak of swine flu as me and my husband are due to go on holiday. Its scary to see how fast the virus is spreading. It just shows that many people don’t know alot about personal hygiene. The number of people infected is nearly reaching 10,000, a staggering 1001 people infected in just one day now that is scary.

i hope all of this would end. it looks like its becoming rare now, and there are only few cases being observed. i hope we all become safe. this is scary.

the use of face masks and boosting your immune system by taking lots of vitamin-C is still an effective way of preventing the spread of the Swine Flu virus.

I read on the internet, from an unofficial source, that the swine flu virus only lasts for about 2 hours outside its host. I know some viruses, such as hepatitis B, can last for up to 6 months outside its host. Does anyone know the actually answer backed up scientifically?

I have a relative who got the Swine Flu in Mexico. It is a good thing that he already recovered from this disease.

I think swine flu is as deadly as the pandemic in the 1990s. However, we have a more advanced technology today that in the past so any pandemic and epedimic diseases are more controllable. Don’t you think it’s best that people are making a fuss about it? This could make them extra careful, isn’t it?
Macky99 on Tue, 4th Aug 2009 10:32 am
It has entered my country and govt. has ask citizens to be careful.
Thanks for this info.

Calling it swine flu discriminates against pigs and tarnishes their image - H1N1 all the way!
I’m kidding btw…

I am not afraid and I think that says a lot about it. I was in Sad Diego and the situation is much better than the media informed. Medical Health wants to take the money and nothing more.

“…I was researching this paper, you would be taking every possible precaution to guard against coming in contact with anyone.”
IMO, with’ or without a swine flu outbreak we should alsway take precautions. There are a lot of other diseases that we can get just by getting in contact with other people.

Eh, my two 5 year old cousins both got the swine flu and fought it off no problem. They had antibiotics of course, but all in all it didn’t seem much different than any other flu. I really don’t think there is much to worry about.

the H1N1 or Swine Flu Virus is very scary at first but now it is well controlled by vaccines and prevention by avoiding going into places with incidence of swine flu.
Aaron on Mon, 7th Sep 2009 6:18 pm
It seems to be controlled pretty well. I have a frend that was in Mexico when the first news broke out. He came back here and there were more cases in his hometown here than where he was living in Mexico.

H1N1 is so lame and terrible. The recent outbreaks has caused a havoc to so many countries and still there are large number of cases reported daily and uncountable number of unreported cases in places where they have no info or awareness on what is swine flu paving way for dreadful spreading of the virus. We are actually blessed and fortunate enough to have very good healthcare developments for curing the disease. I guess right dosage of tamiflu at the right time saves your life from this epidemic outbreak of influenza. Prevention is always better than cure. So be careful and clean.

I think the outbreak has “tamed” by now. But it’s really no big deal and I think the news reports got a bit out of hand. Swine flu is just a type of flu that can be treated. But if you have a high immune system, you have nothing to be worried about.

The situation here become worse and worse, although the vaccine against H1N1 was said to make out, more and more people catch a cold or a flu.(include some primary school students)
At a W.H.O. news conference, Marie-Paule Kieny, chief of the W.H.O.’s vaccine research initiative, estimated that the world’s vaccine makers had the capacity to make a maximum of one to two billion doses of a new H1N1 vaccine within a year after getting a seed vaccine, which the C.D.C. is now working on.

I see the press has recently moved to the new Medical Reform Bill that President Obama is pushing instead of covering something as important as the H1N1 issue that is really starting to rear its ugly head once again.
IMHO H1N1 is what we all need to be tracking- Big Time!

I’m still going to get the vaccine. Make note that doctors are advising to have the regular flu shot about a month in advance of the swine flu vaccine. It seems like people are staying in their homes in San Diego a lot more often these days.

I felt pathetic when I read todays news which said Swine flu sent 722 people into intensive care units during the winter months in Australia and New Zealand so far. I was under the conception that we were the least hit during latest outbreak. But 722 is too much and it emphasizes the need for vaccination. It also alarms on the safe procedures to be considered inorder to keep this tormenting epidemic at bay.
Las Vegas Short Sale Agent on Wed, 21st Oct 2009 10:06 pm
May it be H1N1 or any other flu, a vaccine is still a must. Protection is still better than cure and to think that it would only cost less than having the actual illness. Aside from the vaccine, frequent hand washing is also essential in taking care of one’s health.
