City Center Mall

In 1989, when the City Center Mall opened, it was considered the crown jewel of downtown Columbus. Today it was announced that the city is suing the owners, Simon Property Group, for failing to pay their July rent. This mall has less than 50 percent occupancy. All the big stores have left for greener pastures.

I fear that this could spell the end for the mall. Optimistic city officials are talking about rejuvenating it, but I am not sure it is not beyond help. It has been losing tenants for quite a while.

I can remember going their at Christmas. It was a tradition. At the time, the mall had one of the best Christmas displays in the city. I hope they do give it a new life, but realistically, I don’t see it happening.
